2023 Moses Lab & Nguyen Lab Collaborative Retreat – Part I

Hike at Rattlesnake Point

After several years of isolation and social distancing due to Covid-19 restrictions, The Moses Lab Retreat returned on May 1-2, 2023. As an added bonus, this year the retreat was a collaborative effort, as we were joined by Alex Nguyen Ba’s research group. Alex was Alan Moses’ second Ph.D. student, who now heads his own lab on the U of T Mississauga Campus, following a successful Post-Doctoral placement in Michael Desai’s Lab at Harvard University in Boston.

Despite a rather poor weather forecast, all lab members descended on Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, located in the Halton Region of Ontario. The conservation area spans close to 100 square kilometres, with ~10 kilometres of cliff-edge and forest trails – adjacent to The Niagara Escarpment – with access to The Bruce Trail. The area is named after the snake-like path cut by glaciers along the escarpment. The group navigated some muddy trails, and were rewarded by beautiful scenery from several lookout points – AND, surprisingly pleasant weather, as the rain held off for the duration of our hike!!!

The group followed the Nassagaweya Trail to Buffalo Crag Lookout, at which point the 2 groups separated for some deep, scientific and philosophical discussions. The hike concluded in perfect synchronicity, as the rain started once we were back in the parking lot…!!!!
